Groundwater levels across Telangana are declining steadily due to inadequate rainfall and rapidly depleting reservoir storage. According to available data, the average groundwater level, which stood at 6.22 metres during the previous season, has now dropped to 9.34 metres below the surface. In 13 districts, groundwater has fallen beyond the 10-metre mark, raising serious concerns for agriculture and drinking water availability.
The situation is particularly critical in the Godavari Basin, where the suspension of water lifting operations from Medigadda has led to drying tanks and check dams. Experts believe that pumping water from barrages to replenish reservoirs, irrigation tanks, and projects is essential to restore groundwater levels. Farmers remain worried as the prolonged dry spell continues to impact irrigation and crop prospects.
