Green Cards for Immigrants.. New Proposal by Democrats

The Democratic Party has proposed a legislative solution to protect long-term immigrants in the United States from what it describes as systematic crackdowns under former President Donald Trump’s policies. The proposal aims to amend the outdated Immigration Act of 1929 to provide legal permanent residency, or green cards, to immigrants who have been living in the country for several years. The move is seen as an effort to ensure stability and security for millions contributing to the US economy.

California Senator Alex Padilla has reintroduced the bill he proposed last year, suggesting that immigrants, including H1B visa holders, should be eligible to apply for permanent residency after residing in the US for seven consecutive years. He emphasized that stricter immigration policies have increased uncertainty for many families. The bill proposes amendments to Section 249 of the Immigration and Nationality Act and has received support from several Democratic lawmakers and over 30 organizations. Padilla noted that nearly 8 million people are currently waiting for green cards.
