Europe, traditionally known for its cooler climate, is facing an unprecedented heatwave with record-breaking temperatures affecting millions of people. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 1,300 people have died from heat-related causes since June 21. Countries including France have reported a steady rise in fatalities, while hospitals and emergency services continue to face mounting pressure. School closures and power disruptions have also been reported in several regions.
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus described the extreme heat as a "silent killer," warning that homes, workplaces, and schools across Europe are not designed to withstand such temperatures. An estimated 190 million people are expected to experience temperatures above 35°C, particularly in Germany, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland. WHO has urged European nations to strengthen heat action plans, improve public health preparedness, and enhance climate resilience to reduce future health risks.
