Deep Depression Over Bay of Bengal Triggers Heavy Rains in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha

A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is continuing to affect Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, bringing heavy to very heavy rainfall to several areas. The India Meteorological Department said the system was moving west-northwestwards and was expected to cross the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coast between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur, close to Kalingapatnam, by the night of September 23. Strong winds and rough to very rough seas have also been forecast along the affected coastal areas.

The weather system has already triggered flooding in several places, with streams and rivers receiving large volumes of water and flowing at high levels. The situation has disrupted connectivity in some areas, while strong winds have uprooted trees and electricity poles. Visuals from various parts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha showed overflowing rivers, inundated agricultural fields, waterfalls and floodwaters flowing over bridges and culverts. The IMD has also advised fishermen not to venture into the sea along the affected coasts.
