The central government has asked cab aggregators to discontinue the practice of offering customers an option to pay a tip before booking or completing a ride. Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare said the practice could mislead consumers and amount to an unfair practice.
Khare clarified that tipping should be offered only after the ride is completed and should depend entirely on the customer’s choice. Customers should not be encouraged or pressured to pay a tip in advance. Her comments came a day after the Central Consumer Protection Authority imposed a Rs 10 lakh penalty on Rapido for allegedly engaging in unfair trade practices.
