In an unprecedented development, 34 IAS officers—including 17 district collectors and 17 principal secretaries from various departments—appeared before the Madras High Court on the 5th of this month in connection with contempt of court cases. The matter has come to light only recently and has triggered widespread discussion across the state.
According to court sources, all officers were required to be physically present and remained in the court premises throughout the day until their attendance was officially recorded. The court also reportedly directed a recently transferred woman collector to appear, prompting her to travel by flight to attend the proceedings. She later requested exemption from further appearances and subsequently assumed charge of her new district posting.
