Brazil’s political developments have drawn international attention after presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro reportedly travelled to the United States following his defeat by incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the October 25, 2026, runoff election. Reports say Bolsonaro left Brazil despite a Supreme Court order requiring him to surrender his passports. He reportedly travelled with his wife and two daughters, crossing into Argentina before boarding a private jet that stopped in Ecuador and continued to Miami.
According to reports, U.S. authorities agreed to allow Bolsonaro and his family to enter the country, with President Donald Trump confirming that he had approved his entry. Bolsonaro has questioned the election result and indicated that he would challenge it. His departure has added to political tensions in Brazil, where he is reportedly under investigation in connection with alleged financial misconduct. He denies wrongdoing. Reports also indicate that his father, former president Jair Bolsonaro, is serving a prison sentence over a coup attempt.
