

According to the latest data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), ₹2000 denomination banknotes worth ₹5,817 crore are still in circulation. Since the withdrawal announcement in May 2023, 98.37% of the total ₹2000 notes have been returned to the banking system. The RBI has clarified that ₹2000 notes continue to be legal tender.
The RBI had announced the withdrawal of ₹2000 denomination banknotes from circulation on May 19, 2023. At that time, ₹2000 notes worth ₹3.56 lakh crore were in circulation. As of October 31, 2025, this amount has come down to just ₹5,817 crore, showing a near-complete return of these high-value notes.
The facility to exchange or deposit ₹2000 banknotes has been available at the 19 issue offices of the RBI since May 19, 2023. From October 9, 2023, individuals and entities can also send their ₹2000 banknotes through India Post from any post office in the country to any of the RBI issue offices for credit to their bank accounts.
The RBI’s 19 issue offices are located in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna, and Thiruvananthapuram.
The RBI has stated that it will continue to periodically publish updates on the withdrawal status of the ₹2000 banknotes.
