NTPC is preparing for a major expansion to significantly strengthen its power generation capacity, with a target of reaching 244 GW of operational capacity by 2037, Chairman Gurdeep Singh said. The company currently has an installed capacity of 91 GW and aims to increase it to 149 GW by 2032, including 60 GW of renewable energy capacity. Speaking at NTPC's 50th Annual General Meeting, Singh said India's growing economy and improving living standards are expected to drive a sharp increase in electricity demand.
The company plans to undertake capital expenditure of Rs 16.86 lakh crore across multiple sectors by the end of FY 2036-37. The investments will cover thermal power, hydropower, pumped storage, renewable energy, battery storage, mining and nuclear power. Singh said the coming decade could mark a significant phase of growth in NTPC's history as the company expands its long-term capacity and investment plans to meet India's rising energy requirements.
