Hyderabad-based startup Cosmoserve Space has developed an innovative technology to tackle the growing threat of space debris. Under its ‘Mission Embrace’, the company plans to conduct a soft robotic capture experiment to safely grab inactive satellites in orbit. The payload will be launched aboard Vikram-1, developed by Skyroot Aerospace, as part of the ‘Mission Aagaman’ between July 12 and August 4.
With thousands of defunct satellites accumulating in Earth’s orbit, future space missions face increasing risks. To address this, Cosmoserve is building a dual-spacecraft system capable of removing debris at nearly one-tenth the current market cost. The soft robotic technology is designed to gently capture uncontrolled, tumbling satellites. CEO Chiranjeevi Phaneendra stated that the experimental system was developed within just four months and successfully tested under the supervision of a committee that includes former ISRO scientists. He expressed confidence that this mission will mark a significant milestone in ensuring orbital stability and advancing private space innovation in India.
