The internal rift within the Tata Group’s charitable arm, Tata Trusts, has intensified following the removal of Mehli Mistry, a long-time associate of Ratan Tata. A proposal to reappoint Mistry as trustee was rejected by Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata and two key trustees — TVS Group Honorary Chairman Venu Srinivasan and former Defence Secretary Vijay Singh. With their opposition, the resolution failed to pass, effectively ending Mistry’s tenure with the Trusts. His current term concluded on Tuesday, marking the end of his formal association with Tata Trusts.
This development highlights growing internal divisions between factions within the Trusts — one aligned with Noel Tata and the other loyal to the late Ratan Tata. Mistry’s exit is seen as a major shift in the Trusts’ leadership dynamics, especially as decisions that were once made through consensus under Ratan Tata’s leadership are now facing internal resistance and voting-based outcomes.
