Gig workers across the country are set to stage another strike, protesting rising fuel prices and low earnings. The protest will last for five hours, from 12 noon to 5 PM, during which workers will boycott their duties. The Gig and Platform Service Workers Union (GIPSWU) has urged cab drivers and delivery partners working with app-based platforms to temporarily suspend services in support of the strike.
The recent increase of ₹3 per litre in petrol and diesel retail prices has added financial pressure on drivers and delivery workers. GIPSWU expressed concern that nearly 12 million gig workers will be directly impacted by this hike. The union highlighted declining incomes and lack of social security for workers, issues that have sparked protests in the past as well. In response, the central government had earlier released draft regulations aimed at providing social security benefits to gig workers.
