People waiting for new domestic LPG connections are facing delays, with applications reportedly piling up in several parts of the country. New homeowners, tenants and newly married couples seeking connections are among those affected. Oil marketing companies are currently prioritising the needs of existing consumers amid pressure on global fuel supplies, particularly due to developments in West Asia. As a result, new domestic LPG connections and additional-cylinder allocations have been temporarily restricted, while commercial cylinder supplies continue.
India meets a significant portion of its LPG requirement through imports, making the country vulnerable to disruptions in international supply routes. Against this backdrop, the Centre has asked refineries and oil companies to increase domestic LPG production and maintain adequate stocks. Public and private refineries, along with upstream companies, have been asked to keep capacity of up to 63,810 tonnes of LPG production per day ready. Meanwhile, domestic consumption is estimated at more than 90,000 tonnes a day, with imports accounting for a substantial share.
Dealers of Indane, Bharatgas and HP Gas reportedly say that ensuring uninterrupted cylinder supply to existing customers is currently the top priority. New domestic and double-cylinder connections are therefore being restricted temporarily, while oil companies are also checking for multiple connections registered at the same address. No official date has been announced for resuming new connections. Industry experts expect the process to restart gradually once international supplies improve and domestic stocks stabilise. Applicants are advised to keep their Aadhaar and address proof documents ready and regularly check with their local gas agency.
