Amid the continuing uncertainty over the conflict in West Asia, a fabricated social media post originating from an Indian X account triggered concern in Israel and the United States. The post, shared on August 5, falsely attributed a statement to an Iranian Revolutionary Guard commander claiming that Iran would not abandon its nuclear ambitions as long as Israel and the US possessed nuclear weapons. The post was accompanied by an image of the commander and an AI-generated visual resembling a nuclear test. The claim quickly went viral and was picked up by Israeli media and US political circles.
The claim was later subjected to fact-checking and found to be false. Despite having no credible evidence behind it, the post was amplified by prominent figures, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz. Waltz later deleted his post after the misinformation was exposed. The episode has once again highlighted how unverified social media content and AI-generated visuals can influence narratives surrounding highly sensitive geopolitical conflicts. Iran has consistently maintained that its nuclear programme is intended for peaceful purposes, while the US and Israel have raised concerns over Tehran’s uranium enrichment activities.
