Chinnakannan Sivasankaran, popularly known as Siva, is an Indian-born entrepreneur who once built a business empire worth nearly $4 billion (₹32,000 crore). He founded major ventures like Aircel, Sterling Computers, and Dishnet, and was known for his innovative approach. In the 1980s, he disrupted the computer market by launching affordable “Siva PCs” at ₹33,000 when competitors were selling at around ₹80,000. Later, in 1999, he established Aircel, which quickly grew into a major telecom player before he sold a 74% stake to Maxis Communications in 2005 for over $1 billion.
At the peak of his success, Sivasankaran owned luxurious assets, including two private islands in Seychelles, which he referred to as his “Republic of Siva,” and a lavish 71-room palace in Chennai valued at approximately ₹524 crore. His global real estate portfolio extended across London, Canada, and California. However, the collapse of Aircel in 2018 due to intense telecom competition led to massive financial losses estimated at around ₹7,000 crore. His business dealings were also linked to the 2G spectrum controversy, further impacting his fortunes. Over time, he lost key assets, including his private islands and iconic properties, marking a dramatic fall from his once-dominant position.
