WhatsApp has begun rolling out a long-awaited feature that allows users to communicate without sharing their phone numbers. With the new username system, users can send messages and make calls using a unique username instead of a personal number. Previously, sharing a phone number was mandatory to start a conversation. This update enhances privacy by allowing users to connect without exposing personal contact details. It also reduces unwanted contact, as blocking someone via username limits further reach.
Usernames must be between 3 and 35 characters and can include lowercase letters, numbers, dots, and underscores. Certain patterns like web-style endings are not allowed.
For additional security, users can set a 4-digit code. New contacts will need both the username and this code to initiate communication, helping reduce spam. The feature is currently being rolled out to a limited number of users and will gradually expand. Users can check availability in their profile settings.
