OpenAI has launched the Codex app for macOS, a dedicated desktop application that allows developers to manage and collaborate with multiple AI coding agents simultaneously. The macOS-native app enables AI agents to run tasks in parallel, organise workflows through dedicated threads, and interact directly with code repositories. Designed to eliminate frequent context switching between browsers, editors, and terminals, the Codex app acts as a central hub for agent-driven coding, significantly improving productivity and coordination within development teams.
Codex, first introduced in April 2025, is a cloud-based software engineering agent powered by large language models fine-tuned for coding. The new app supports threaded workflows, diff reviews, and in-context iteration, allowing developers to track, refine, and review code changes efficiently. With reusable Skills for consistent workflows and support for multiple programming languages, the Codex app is available on macOS with Apple Silicon support. OpenAI also confirmed plans to expand availability to Windows and Linux platforms in the coming months.
