OpenAI has rolled out a new quality-of-life update for ChatGPT, its artificial intelligence chatbot application. Previously, enabling the advanced Voice Mode opened a separate full-screen interface for two-way voice conversations with the AI. With the latest update, the functionality is now fully integrated within the chat interface, eliminating the need for a separate screen. This allows users to view and interact with messages while speaking with the AI.
According to OpenAI’s official post on X, the advanced Voice Mode feature now works directly within the chat interface. Voice Mode allows two-way, real-time voice conversations where the chatbot responds naturally, mimicking human pitch and tone. Initially launched in July 2024 for paid subscribers, it was expanded to the free tier in August 2025.
The integration provides several immediate benefits. Users can now see and review messages while speaking, allowing the AI to show visuals such as maps or assist with its new Shopping Research tool. Additionally, users can generate images during a conversation and review or suggest edits without ending the session. Voice-based vibe coding is also possible with this update.
For users who prefer the previous setup, OpenAI allows switching back to the old style. On the app, open the options menu (two horizontal lines on the top left), tap your name, select the Voice menu, and toggle the Separate Mode option to use Voice Mode in the full-screen format.
