MediaTek announced its collaboration with Starlink Mobile to support wireless emergency alerts via satellite communication. The system will allow users to receive critical alerts from the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) framework, Commercial Mobile Alert System (CMAS), and Earthquake and Tsunami Warning System (ETWS), even when they are outside the range of telecom towers. Over 4.4 million users have already accessed Starlink Mobile during emergencies in countries like the US, Canada, and Japan.
At MWC 2026 in Barcelona, MediaTek showcased the feature using its M90 modem, which supports Sub-6GHz connectivity. The company also presented “Omni Glasses,” AI powered, privacy-focused wearable devices that provide real time situational awareness and some offline functionalities using MediaTek’s Dimensity 9500 chipset. It is not yet clear if these AI glasses will be released for consumers.
Additionally, MediaTek displayed new extreme zoom capabilities for smartphones, powered by machine learning and its image signal processors. The company claims these zoom features can rival professional broadcast equipment and offer support for long-range shots. The innovations were presented at MediaTek’s booth during MWC 2026, which runs through Thursday.
