Leading semiconductor giant Qualcomm is preparing to significantly increase the prices of its smartphone processors. The company has informed its clients through a letter that chips supplied after September 1 will see a double-digit price hike. The primary reasons cited include heavy investments shifting toward artificial intelligence data centers and ongoing memory chip shortages, which have put severe pressure on the global supply chain. Qualcomm stated that it can no longer absorb the rising costs imposed by suppliers, and the price increase will impact its entire product portfolio. As the company supplies processors to major brands such as Samsung, Xiaomi, and OnePlus, smartphone prices are expected to rise accordingly. Industry estimates suggest that the next-generation Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 processor could increase from $240–$280 to around $300.
In an effort to reduce dependence on smartphones, Qualcomm is also expanding into other sectors. The company has introduced the Snapdragon C platform targeting the budget laptop segment priced between $300 and $500, offering AI capabilities and improved battery life. Additionally, Qualcomm has secured strategic deals with major firms like Microsoft and Meta for AI data center chips, claiming its hardware delivers 4 to 8 times better performance per watt. Through this diversification strategy, Qualcomm aims to generate $40 billion in revenue from non-handset markets by 2029.
