UP Reward Policy Puts Commonwealth Champion Asmita Dey Under Scanner

Commonwealth Games gold medalist Asmita Dey has scripted history by becoming the first Indian judoka to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. However, despite her remarkable achievement, the 23-year-old athlete is facing uncertainty over receiving the Uttar Pradesh government's ₹1.5 crore cash reward.

Originally from Tripura, Asmita has been representing Uttar Pradesh in national and international judo competitions and has been serving as a Sub-Inspector in the Uttar Pradesh Police for the past three years. Under the state's 2024 sports incentive policy, athletes must meet certain eligibility criteria, including being a permanent resident of Uttar Pradesh, representing the state at international events, and studying for at least two years at a state-recognized educational institution. Officials are currently examining whether Asmita fulfills the required conditions. Uttar Pradesh Sports Director R.P. Singh stated that the list of medal-winning athletes from the Glasgow Commonwealth Games is being prepared, and eligible sportspersons will receive the announced rewards.
