Shreyas Iyer Will Prove Himself With Experience: Sunil Gavaskar

Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has backed Shreyas Iyer to establish himself as India’s T20 captain despite a difficult start to his leadership career. Gavaskar pointed out that many successful captains began with defeats and improved with experience. He believes the upcoming Asian Games will be an important opportunity for Iyer to make his mark and said the Indian team has the ability to win the gold medal if it performs to its potential. Gavaskar also said that whether Shubman Gill should return to the T20 side is a decision for the selectors, while the selected Asian Games squad deserves everyone’s support.

Gavaskar also stressed that cricket at the Asian Games will be highly competitive, despite being played in the T20 format where a match can change within a few deliveries. He identified Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan as strong contenders and warned against underestimating Nepal. On athletes’ accommodation, Gavaskar said it could be a valuable experience for cricketers to stay alongside athletes from other disciplines and learn from their journeys. He also expressed interest in watching India’s boxers, wrestlers and relay teams, praising their performances and hoping they continue their form at the Games.
