Indian vice-captain Shreyas Iyer remains a major doubt for the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa, beginning November 30, as he continues to recover from a freak injury sustained during the Australia tour. The middle-order batsman, who recently returned from Sydney, has been advised additional recovery time and is unlikely to regain full fitness before the series.
According to sources in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Iyer’s medical team has confirmed he needs over a month to return to match fitness. The selection committee has been informed about his condition and does not want to rush his comeback. During the incident in Sydney, Iyer reportedly experienced a severe drop in oxygen levels and temporary blackout after suffering a laceration to the spleen with internal bleeding while taking a diving catch to dismiss Alex Carey.
Though Iyer has since been discharged from the Sydney hospital and is reported to be in a stable condition, doctors have recommended rest and follow-up consultations before he resumes cricketing activity. In a heartfelt post on social media, Iyer thanked fans for their support, saying he was “recovering well and getting better every passing day.” His participation in the South Africa ODIs now appears highly uncertain, with the selectors expected to name a replacement soon.
