Rumors have recently been circulating in the cricket world that Team India’s king, Virat Kohli, might be stepping away from the Indian Premier League (IPL). These rumors arose because Kohli reportedly refused to renew a commercial deal with his franchise, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Fans were immediately concerned, wondering if this meant that the legend who has been playing for RCB since 2008 might be bidding farewell to the IPL.
However, cricket experts like Aakash Chopra clarified that these reports were misunderstood. Kohli did not reject his player contract; he only declined the agreement related to commercial promotions. Chopra pointed out that RCB recently won a trophy, so why would Kohli leave the team as a player? He explained that Kohli remains committed to RCB as a cricketer, but is stepping back from business deals and promotional activities.
That said, considering Kohli has already retired from Test cricket and might also step away from T20 internationals after the 2024 T20 World Cup, there is strong speculation that he is approaching the final phase of his career. At 36 years old, many believe he wants to reduce his workload and focus on family, which could explain a potential future break from the IPL as well.
On the other hand, Kohli himself stated after RCB won the historic 2025 season title, “I will play for RCB till my last day in the IPL.” This statement contradicts the rumors, suggesting he will not retire immediately. Instead, it seems he is giving a signal that RCB should not rely on him for promotional plans in the future. Essentially, Kohli has informed the team management that his photos or likeness should not be used commercially without his consent.
