The Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore, one of the most popular teams in the league, has reportedly undergone a change in ownership. A consortium led by the Aditya Birla Group, along with the Times of India, Bolt Ventures and Blackstone Inc., is said to have acquired the franchise for approximately ₹16,706 crore. The team, which is currently owned by Diageo, is expected to be transferred to the new owners after the IPL 2026 season.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that the new ownership is considering a change in the team’s name. It is believed that the current name, “Royal Challengers Bangalore” (RCB), may not align with the new brand vision, prompting discussions around rebranding. As part of this, the name “Royal Kannadigars Bangalore” (RKB) is reportedly under consideration. If implemented, this could mark one of the most significant identity changes in IPL history.
The proposed name change is said to be aimed at strengthening the team’s regional identity and connecting more closely with fans in Karnataka. However, no official announcement has been made so far and the news remains limited to social media speculation. Clarity on whether the team will indeed undergo a name change is expected only after an official confirmation. In the meantime, the reports have sparked widespread discussion among IPL fans.
