India defeated New Zealand by five wickets in the first ODI to take the lead in the series. Following rain interruptions, India's target was revised to 167 runs, which the team chased down in 22.4 overs. Virat Kohli played a decisive role with a 74-run knock off just 51 balls. Although India lost a few middle-order wickets during the chase, the team managed to overcome the pressure and secure victory. Speaking after the match, captain Shubman Gill expressed satisfaction with the team's overall performance, praising both the bowling and fielding units. He described Rohit Sharma's run-out as a turning point that shifted the momentum in India's favour. Gill also praised Kohli's batting, saying his approach made the chase much easier for the team.
Gill acknowledged that the partnership between New Zealand batters Mitchell and Glenn Phillips had put India under some pressure. He also praised young pacers Anshul Kamboj and Gurnoor Brar for their performances. According to Gill, Kamboj's ability to generate seam movement and deliver with the old ball makes him well suited to such conditions. He added that Brar's pace and extra bounce could make a difference even when the pitch offers little assistance. Gill observed that the pitch became quicker after the rain interruption and said India focused on playing normally because of the manageable target. Looking ahead to the upcoming match in Wellington, he expressed confidence that the team could maintain the same level of consistency.
