Democrats secured a sweeping victory in the US midterm elections, winning control of both chambers of Congress and triggering a strong rally on Wall Street. US stock markets closed sharply higher on Wednesday, with investors responding positively to the election outcome. The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 1,569 points, or 3.03 per cent. The S&P 500 gained 1.58 per cent, while the Nasdaq Composite advanced 1.44 per cent. Reduced political uncertainty and falling oil prices helped boost investor sentiment, sending major indices to their strongest levels in months.
Investors had earlier viewed President Donald Trump as supportive of the stock market because of his focus on tax cuts, business-friendly policies and deregulation. Although some expected Republican losses to weigh on equities, markets moved in the opposite direction after the Democratic victory. Expectations that the election outcome could increase pressure for a resolution to the Iran conflict contributed to a sharp decline in oil prices. Treasury yields also eased. Investors are reportedly anticipating greater congressional oversight of the Trump administration and constraints on some of its policy decisions. These factors, along with the easing of geopolitical concerns, supported the post-election rally.
