A strong Blue Wave swept through the US midterm elections, with Democrats securing majorities in both chambers of Congress, boosting investor confidence on Wall Street. Following the election results, US stock markets climbed to their highest levels in three months. The Dow Jones surged by 1,500 points, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq gained 1.58% and 1.44%, respectively. The S&P 500 recorded its biggest single-day gain in three months. Financial stocks, including JPMorgan and Berkshire Hathaway, along with technology giants such as Microsoft and Alphabet, led the market rally.
Investors had previously viewed Donald Trump as a market-friendly leader because of his tax cuts, business-friendly policies and plans to ease regulations. Although Democrats' strong performance was initially expected to unsettle the markets, the opposite happened. Investors believe the new congressional balance could enable Democrats to put pressure on Trump to control government spending and push for an end to the Iran war. The election outcome also eased concerns over tensions in West Asia, sending crude oil prices lower and Treasury bonds higher. Meanwhile, expectations of easing inflationary pressures have raised hopes that the US Federal Reserve may gain more room to consider interest rate cuts.
Energy markets reacted sharply to the election results, with crude oil prices witnessing a significant decline. Brent crude fell by 8% to around $94 per barrel, dropping below the $100 mark. Democrats' stronger position in Congress could allow them to increase pressure on Trump to bring the ongoing war to an end. Trump himself acknowledged that the conflict with Iran played a role in the Republican Party's electoral setback. Rising oil prices amid tensions in West Asia had recently fuelled inflation concerns in the US. However, the latest developments have eased some of those fears. Investors believe that a reduction in inflationary pressure could give the US Federal Reserve greater flexibility to consider lowering interest
