The BCCI has instructed senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to participate in domestic cricket if they wish to remain eligible for national selection in the ODI format. Since both have retired from Tests and T20Is, the board wants them to maintain match fitness and form by playing in domestic tournaments like the Vijay Hazare Trophy ahead of upcoming international series.
As the South Africa ODI series approaches, Rohit Sharma has confirmed his availability to represent Mumbai, while Virat Kohli is yet to communicate his decision regarding participation. The BCCI’s stance highlights its commitment to keeping all players, regardless of stature, in regular competitive rhythm before international duties.
The directive also aligns with India’s long-term plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup, emphasizing fitness, form, and consistency as key selection criteria. By encouraging its senior-most players to stay active in domestic cricket, the board aims to set a strong example for younger talents and ensure the entire squad maintains high performance standards.
