Mumbai Indians have announced a major change ahead of the IPL 2027 season, with Mahela Jayawardene stepping down as head coach by mutual agreement. The five-time IPL champions have struggled to maintain consistent performances in recent seasons, making this development significant for the franchise. Mumbai Indians confirmed Jayawardene’s departure through a post on X, acknowledging his contribution to the team and highlighting the strong relationship he shared with the franchise beyond his coaching responsibilities. Jayawardene also expressed gratitude for his decade-long association with Mumbai Indians, thanking the players, coaching staff and fans for their support.
Jayawardene first joined Mumbai Indians in 2017 and played a key role in the team’s IPL title victories in 2017, 2019 and 2020. Franchise owner Nita Ambani praised his dedication, honesty and passion for the game, thanking him for his services. Meanwhile, speculation continues over a possible return of Rohit Sharma to the captaincy. Rohit led Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles, but Hardik Pandya has been captaining the side since 2024. Mumbai finished that season with a disappointing performance before reaching the playoffs in 2025, while the team struggled again in 2026. However, the franchise has not officially confirmed any decision regarding its captaincy for IPL 2027.
