The Jubilee Hills bye-election in Telangana has turned into a high-stakes political battle, drawing the full attention of the ruling Congress, BRS, and BJP. The Congress is going all out to retain the seat and prove its strength after its recent victories, while BRS is fighting hard to regain its lost ground. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and BRS working president K. T. Rama Rao have taken charge of their respective party campaigns, making it a matter of prestige for both leaders. The BJP, meanwhile, is trying to upset the equation by tapping into the urban voter base and consolidating the support of Janasena and its own cadre. The election was necessitated by the demise of sitting BRS MLA Maganti Gopinath, with BRS fielding his wife Maganti Sunitha, while BJP once again put forward Lankala Deepak Reddy and Congress chose Naveen Yadav.
This bypoll is not just about one seat—it’s being seen as a reflection of public sentiment in Hyderabad ahead of the GHMC elections. For the Congress, it’s an opportunity to expand its base in Greater Hyderabad, where it fared poorly in the 2023 polls. For the BRS, it’s a question of survival and relevance after its setback in the Lok Sabha elections. Senior BRS leader T. Harish Rao called the election a “referendum” on the Congress government’s performance, while the BJP is pushing aggressively with key leaders like G. Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay leading the charge. With Jubilee Hills being a mix of posh neighborhoods and weaker colonies, civic development issues have become central to all campaigns, making this a true prestige fight in Telangana politics.
