Former Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy toured areas affected by the recent cyclone. His visit received an overwhelming response from the public. Farmers poured out their grievances to Jagan, expressing their hardships. Later, Jagan came down heavily on the current government, criticizing its handling of agricultural issues. He pointed out that around 16 natural calamities have occurred in the past 18 months, severely affecting farmers. Yet, he claimed, the government has failed to support even a single farmer during these crises.
Agriculture Minister Atchannaidu, apparently feeling the need to respond to Jagan’s remarks, attempted a counterattack but his weak rebuttal has drawn public ridicule. While Jagan stood among the people explaining how the government’s failures were hurting farmers, Atchannaidu merely challenged him to discuss the issue in the Assembly a move people are calling an empty challenge. Jagan accused the government of providing meager investment support, canceling free crop insurance, withdrawing input subsidies, denying minimum support prices, and failing to ensure urea supply. In response, Atchannaidu claimed the government spent ₹1,000 crores on farmers over the last 18 months.
However, instead of giving factual clarifications, Atchannaidu kept inviting Jagan to debate in the Assembly. People are questioning why an Assembly discussion is needed to address such clear public issues especially when Jagan no longer attends Assembly sessions. Many view this as a sign of helplessness on Atchannaidu’s part. If Atchannaidu truly wants to defend his government, he should present documentary evidence showing how much crop insurance premium was paid, on what dates, and for how many farmers and acres. That alone could silence Jagan’s allegations.
Inviting him to a debate in the Assembly, where ruling party members outnumber the opposition, only looks like a political ploy to dominate the discussion, not a genuine attempt to clarify facts. People believe that if the government had truly worked for farmers, it could have easily shown proof in a press meet instead of resorting to weak Assembly challenges.
