Leader of the Opposition and MP Rahul Gandhi has stated that preventing him from speaking in the Lok Sabha amounts to a violation of parliamentary tradition. On Tuesday, Rahul Gandhi wrote a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, alleging that there was a deliberate attempt to stop him, in his capacity as Leader of the Opposition, from speaking on issues related to national security.
In his letter, Rahul Gandhi said that such actions led to serious unrest in the House. He emphasized that national security is a crucial component of the President’s Address and that it is essential for Parliament to hold a discussion on the subject. He asserted that blocking his speech in the House amounts to a denial of fundamental democratic rights.
Rahul Gandhi further stated that, for the first time in parliamentary history, a Leader of the Opposition was prevented from speaking on the President’s Address at the direction of the government. Describing this as a blot on Indian democracy, he strongly condemned the incident and conveyed his formal protest in the letter addressed to Speaker Om Birla.
