Pakistan Defence Minister's Remarks on PoK Protests Spark Fresh Controversy

Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has drawn criticism after describing protesters in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) as "enemies of Pakistan" and defending the actions of security forces during recent clashes. Speaking to a local television channel, Asif said there was no distinction between those protesting in PoK and Pakistan's adversaries, adding that there was no scope for negotiations with the demonstrators. His remarks came amid reports of violence during the first phase of the PoK Assembly elections, in which the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) alleged that 14 of its members were killed and more than 24 people were injured in clashes with security personnel.

The election process for the 45-member PoK Assembly began this week and is being conducted in three phases, with polling scheduled to continue until next month. Following the developments, India reiterated its long-standing position that the territories under Pakistan's occupation are an integral part of India. The Indian government also accused Pakistan of attempting to use the elections to divert attention from alleged human rights violations in the region.
