Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have been sentenced to 17 years in prison in the Toshakhana corruption case. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) special court handed down the verdict on Saturday. The court in Rawalpindi, where the hearings took place at Adiala Jail, found that the couple sold a luxury jewelry set gifted to them by the Saudi Crown Prince during Imran Khan’s May 2021 visit to Saudi Arabia without depositing it in the government treasury (Toshakhana).
Imran Khan was sentenced to 10 years under Pakistan Penal Code Section 409 for breach of trust and 7 years under various sections of the Anti-Corruption Act. Additionally, the couple has been fined PKR 16.4 million. This verdict prevents Imran Khan from contesting elections for the next decade. Imran Khan’s legal team has stated that they plan to challenge the verdict in the High Court.
