The US Open 2026 is witnessing discussions beyond the performances of its star players, with the behaviour of influencers and some spectators drawing criticism. Organisers had expanded media access for content creators to promote tennis, but the move has reportedly created problems inside the usually quiet tennis environment. During the Osaka–Zakharova match, the use of powerful ring lights for content creation attracted criticism, while influencers were also accused of talking loudly during an exhibition match featuring tennis legend Roger Federer. Last year, 54 influencers reportedly received media credentials, while the number has crossed 100 this year. Tennis star Jessica Pegula also expressed concern over content creators taking photographs and using selfie lights while players are trying to perform at their highest level.
Concerns have also been raised over spectator behaviour around the tournament venue in New York. Reports suggest that excessive alcohol consumption and increased cannabis use in surrounding areas have created an uncomfortable atmosphere for players and fans. The tournament’s popular Honey Deuce cocktail has also seen huge demand, with more supplies being brought into New York as the event continues. With several days of competition still remaining, organisers face the challenge of maintaining a respectful and distraction-free environment. Strict measures may be necessary to ensure that the US Open remains focused on the sport rather than off-court controversies.
