Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah has triggered a political controversy with his remarks about Pakistan’s role in the Kashmir issue. Speaking at a party workers’ meeting in Baramulla, Abdullah said Pakistan was protecting the people of Jammu and Kashmir by repeatedly raising the Kashmir issue at international forums. He also alleged that the Centre was not adequately addressing the concerns of the people of the region and questioned whether they could expect justice from the government. Urging party workers to stand up for their rights and identity, Abdullah said people should have the courage to fight for justice rather than simply waiting for the government to act. He further alleged that the Centre remained silent because of international pressure.
Abdullah also called on Muslims across the country to unite against demolition drives that he alleged were targeting Muslim homes, shops and religious structures in BJP-ruled states. His remarks drew a sharp response from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Jammu and Kashmir BJP president Sat Sharma condemned the comments and demanded a public apology from Abdullah, questioning his portrayal of Pakistan as a protector of Kashmiris. Sharma argued that people in Jammu and Kashmir were safe in India and said Abdullah should consider moving to Pakistan if he continued making such statements. The controversy has intensified the political debate over the Kashmir issue, the Centre’s policies and the relationship between India and Pakistan.
