The Central Government is planning to complete the legal process to grant statutory status to Amaravati as the capital of Andhra Pradesh during the ongoing Parliament session. The Ministry of Home Affairs is preparing to introduce the related Bill in the upcoming Budget Session. As part of the process, a draft Cabinet note has been circulated to the Ministries of Housing and Urban Affairs, Law, Expenditure, and NITI Aayog, seeking their opinions.
According to official sources, the Law Ministry has already conveyed its views, while the Home Ministry has requested the remaining departments to submit their feedback at the earliest. Once the Cabinet note receives approval, the Law Ministry will prepare the final Bill. After obtaining Cabinet clearance again, the legislation will be formally introduced in Parliament for discussion and passage.
Under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, Hyderabad served as the common capital of both Telugu states for ten years. Although the Andhra Pradesh government began administrative operations from Amaravati in 2016, it was not accorded formal legal status due to the shared capital provision. With the ten-year period ending on June 2, 2024, the state government has requested the Centre to officially declare Amaravati as the capital from that date, submitting detailed reports on the selection process, ongoing administration, and capital development progress.
