After India’s record-breaking spiritual marvels, the United States is now set to witness a monumental addition — the world’s tallest Lord Murugan statue, coming up in North Carolina. The 155-foot statue, to be installed in the Carolina Murugan Temple, will reportedly surpass the height of both North America’s tallest Hanuman statue and even the Statue of Liberty.
North Carolina has become a spiritual destination for Indian communities, particularly those from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka, where Lord Murugan (Karthikeya) is deeply revered as the god of wisdom, prosperity, and victory. The state already houses temples like Somesvara Temple and Venkateswara Temple, often called the Tirupati Balaji of the East Coast.
The project is being developed in Moncure, Chatham County, over 130 acres of land, which will be transformed into a vast spiritual and cultural campus. The Murugan statue will rise 190 feet tall including its 35-foot pedestal, making it one of the tallest Hindu statues ever built outside India.
Main Sanctum: A South-Indian-style sanctum (garbhagriha) dedicated to Lord Murugan for daily rituals and abhishekams.
Shrines for Other Deities: Temples for accompanying gods and goddesses to preserve traditional Hindu worship customs.
Meditation & Learning Halls: Dedicated spaces for yoga, meditation, spiritual classes, and scripture learning.
Festival & Cultural Zones: Venues for Tamil and Hindu festivals, classical music, and cultural events.
Walking Pathways: Serene walkways connecting shrines and gardens for devotees.
Community Areas: Open gathering spaces for families, youth, and cultural groups.
Eco-Friendly Design: The temple layout will maintain lush greenery and promote sustainability.
The Carolina Murugan Temple project is a non-profit community initiative with no government funding. Phase 1 of the construction, costing around $3–5 million, is already underway, focusing on the main temple, gopurams, and site infrastructure. The entire project is expected to cost over $10 million, funded through:
Donations from Indian diaspora organizations
Tamil and South Indian families across the US
International Hindu devotees
Cultural fundraisers and sponsorships
Once completed, the Carolina Murugan Temple will stand as a symbol of Indian heritage, devotion, and global unity — a breathtaking fusion of faith and architecture, proudly showcasing the spiritual identity of the Indian diaspora in America.
