India’s digital payments ecosystem continues to surge, with UPI transactions crossing ₹22,830 crore in 2025, reflecting robust growth in cashless payments. According to data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the total number of UPI transactions reached 228 billion (22,800 crore transactions) during 2025. This marks a significant jump compared to 172.2 billion transactions recorded in 2024, indicating a sharp rise in user adoption and transaction volume.
The growth has been driven by increased acceptance of UPI across merchants, wider smartphone penetration, and growing trust in digital payments. NPCI stated that UPI transactions registered a 33 percent year-on-year increase compared to the previous year, underlining India’s rapid transition towards a digital-first economy and strengthening its position as a global leader in real-time payments.
