Concerns have resurfaced over the fate of Indian nationals who joined the Russian army amid the Russia–Ukraine war. Jagdeep Kumar, a resident of Punjab, alleged that at least 10 Indians have been killed in the conflict, while four others are missing. Jagdeep had travelled to Russia in search of his younger brother, Mandeep Kumar, and made these claims after returning to India.
Citing documents issued by the Russian army, he stated that three of the deceased were from Punjab, while the others belonged to Uttar Pradesh and Jammu regions. He alleged that travel agents lured Indian youth with promises of jobs abroad, sent them to Russia, and they were later forcibly recruited into the army. Jagdeep said he has had no contact with his brother since March 2024.
The matter was brought to the attention of AAP Rajya Sabha MP Balbir Singh Seechewal, who urged External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to intervene. The Indian government had earlier raised the issue with Russia in September, seeking a halt to recruitment of Indians and the release of those already enlisted. While some Indians have returned safely, families of others remain anxious.
