The Supreme Court of India has issued crucial guidelines to address the rising number of road accidents across the country. Taking suo motu cognisance of recent accidents in Rajasthan’s Phalodi and Telangana’s Rangareddy districts, the court expressed serious concern over illegal parking and frequent mishaps at identified black spots. It reiterated that Article 21 of the Constitution guarantees the right to life with dignity, which also includes the right to safe travel, making road safety a key responsibility of the government.
The court directed authorities to implement advanced traffic management systems, prevent new commercial constructions within the right of way, and remove illegal structures along national highways within 60 days. It also mandated the formation of district-level road safety task forces within 15 days and continuous monitoring by police and transport officials using tracking systems. Facilities such as parking zones every 75 km with rest amenities were recommended, along with the identification and correction of accident-prone black spots. The court will review the implementation of these measures after two months.
