The construction of the Alluri Sitarama Raju Bhogapuram International Airport, considered a key project for the development of North Andhra, has reached its final stage, said Roads and Buildings Minister B.C. Janardhan Reddy. During his visit to Vizianagaram and Parvathipuram districts, he inspected the ongoing works and held discussions with representatives of GMR Group. Addressing the media later, he stated that around 97% of the construction has been completed and the airport is likely to be inaugurated in July or August this year. He revealed that earth runway works are fully completed, while air traffic control works have reached 95% completion. He also added that the development of connecting roads will be completed soon and that the state government is planning to construct six more new airports.
Criticizing former Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy over his earlier remarks on the project, Janardhan Reddy said that leaders of the YSR Congress Party had once questioned the need for an airport in a region where even basic bus connectivity was lacking. He pointed out the contradiction, stating that the same project is now being claimed as their initiative. The event was attended by MSME Minister Kondapalli Srinivas, MP Kalisetti Appalanaidu and MLAs Adithi Gajapathiraju and Lokam Nagamadhavi, among others.
