Sleeper buses have gained immense popularity in recent years, especially for overnight travel between major cities. Many passengers prefer them for their comfort, assuming they can rest peacefully during long journeys. However, after several tragic accidents, a serious question has emerged — are sleeper buses truly safe?
In the beginning, only a few sleeper buses were in service. Gradually, many private operators started converting regular seating buses into sleeper coaches to attract more passengers and charge higher fares. Today, many of these buses are overcrowded with 35 to 40 berths, leaving minimal space for movement.
A major concern is that most of these buses are locally modified rather than factory-built under proper safety standards. The windows are often sealed, preventing passengers from escaping quickly during emergencies like fire or collision. In case of an accident, most passengers, who are usually asleep, wake up late and find themselves trapped inside. The narrow aisles, tightly stacked berths, and closed structure make evacuation extremely difficult.
Although states like Andhra Pradesh and Telangana don’t easily grant approvals for sleeper bus registrations, many operators bypass local regulations by registering these buses in certain North Indian states and later operating them here. This loophole raises serious doubts about the quality and safety of these vehicles.
In fire-related incidents, smoke spreads rapidly inside the closed compartments. With poor ventilation and sealed windows, panic grows faster than passengers can react. Those sleeping on upper berths often struggle to climb down, leading to heavy casualties.
Passengers must realize that while sleeper buses may appear comfortable, their safety during emergencies remains uncertain. Many choose comfort over caution without checking for emergency exits, fire extinguishers, or openable windows.
Authorities need to re-examine safety norms, ensure that only factory-manufactured sleeper coaches are permitted, and conduct regular inspections. Operators should not be allowed to overload or carry out unauthorized modifications merely for profit.
Comfort should never come at the cost of life. Before boarding a sleeper bus, passengers should ask themselves — are they stepping into a safe vehicle or just a closed box with no escape in an emergency?
