The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is likely to be trifurcated, with official orders expected to be issued on February 10. With the tenure of the present GHMC governing body ending on the same day, the state government is planning to divide GHMC into three separate corporations—Sherilingampally, Hyderabad, and Malkajgiri. As per the proposal, elections to the newly formed corporations must be conducted within six months from February 10, meaning the electoral process is expected to be completed by August.
The government has taken this step to ensure administrative efficiency and faster urban development across Hyderabad. Earlier, 27 municipalities within the Outer Ring Road limits were merged into GHMC to expand its jurisdiction. However, considering the challenges of managing such a vast civic body, the government has decided to split it into three parts. The restructuring is also intended to align municipal boundaries with police commissionerate limits. Recently, the Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Rachakonda commissionerates were reorganized, with Rachakonda being renamed as Malkajgiri and the introduction of a new Future City Commissionerate. IAS officers Vinay Krishna Reddy and Srujana were recently transferred to GHMC as Additional Commissioners, and they are likely to be appointed as Special Commissioners for Malkajgiri and Sherilingampally respectively, while Commissioner Karnan is expected to continue in his present role.
