A bill issued at Theo Cafe has sparked discussion on social media after a customer noticed an unusual charge labeled “Gas Crisis Charge” on the receipt. The bill, dated March 15, 2026, shows that the customer ordered two mint lemonades costing ₹179 each, bringing the subtotal to ₹358. Along with the standard GST components—CGST and SGST at 2.5 percent each—the receipt also included a five percent “Gas Crisis Charge,” adding ₹17.01 to the total amount.
The inclusion of this extra charge has raised questions among customers about transparency in restaurant billing practices. While some eateries introduce temporary surcharges to offset rising operational costs such as cooking gas prices, customers say such charges should be clearly communicated beforehand. The receipt from the Bengaluru-based cafe has now triggered a broader conversation online about hidden or additional service charges in the food and beverage industry.
