The Hyderabad Metro Rail has now come entirely under the control of the State Government. The Telangana Government has taken over the metro services, which were previously being operated by L&T. To this effect, a share purchase agreement was executed, and the government acquired 100 percent of the shares for approximately ₹1,461.47 crore. While the concerned officials have signed this agreement, the government is also set to refinance the substantial debt associated with the metro project.
Having provided services across three corridors spanning 69 kilometers since November 2017, the metro currently serves approximately 4.5 lakh passengers daily. To date, around 86 crore passenger journeys have been recorded. Officials anticipate that, now that the project is under government control, the planning, implementation, and coordination of services for Phase-1 and Phase-2 projects will see significant improvement.
Prior to this agreement, the Chairman of L&T paid a courtesy visit to the Chief Minister and held discussions on various matters. The government is currently formulating plans to expand metro services in the future, making them more comprehensive and passenger-friendly for the city of Hyderabad.
