The Supreme Court of India has made significant observations regarding the growing trend of free welfare schemes implemented by various state governments, stating that excessive distribution of freebies could hinder long-term economic development. The court noted that several states are already facing severe financial deficits, yet continue to introduce large-scale free schemes, raising concerns about fiscal sustainability and responsible governance.
The bench further observed that such schemes are sometimes extended even to financially stable sections, including landowners, instead of being strictly targeted toward genuinely eligible beneficiaries. Stressing the need for balanced policy decisions, the Supreme Court emphasized that welfare measures should reach only deserving individuals and must be designed without compromising the financial stability of states. The remarks have reignited debate over welfare policies and economic accountability across the country.
