Paris woke up to shocking news as thieves pulled off a bold heist at the world-renowned Louvre Museum on Sunday morning. French Culture Minister Rachida Dati confirmed the incident on X, stating that the museum would remain closed for the rest of the day due to “exceptional reasons.”According to authorities, a group of 3–4 intruders used a basket lift and construction ladder to access the museum from the side facing the Seine River, where some renovation work was ongoing. The thieves cut through window panes using disc cutters, smashed display cases, and stole nine pieces of jewellery from Napoleon and Empress Eugénie’s collection in the Galerie d’Apollon.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez revealed that it appeared to be a meticulously planned operation, suggesting the team had conducted prior reconnaissance. Remarkably, no one was injured during the heist. The stolen items, considered of priceless historical and patrimonial value, are currently being inventoried by forensic experts. Police have sealed off the museum, evacuated visitors, and closed nearby streets. Early reports suggest one of the stolen jewels, believed to be part of Empress Eugénie’s crown, was later found outside the museum, though damaged.
The Louvre, home to over 33,000 works including ancient artifacts, sculptures, and European masterpieces, is famous worldwide for treasures such as the Mona Lisa, Venus de Milo, and the Winged Victory of Samothrace. The Galerie d’Apollon houses a selection of the French Crown Jewels, making this theft particularly shocking.
