In a landmark judgment, a court in Tamil Nadu has sentenced nine police personnel to death in a custodial death case that shocked the nation. During the COVID period, a father and son, Jayaraj and Bennix, were allegedly tortured to death by police in Sathankulam, Thoothukudi district, for keeping their mobile shop open beyond permitted hours. This incident raised serious concerns about police brutality and human rights violations.
The Madurai District First Additional Sessions Court delivered this historic verdict, awarding death sentences to all accused from A1 to A9. Along with the punishment, the court also imposed fines, including ₹24 lakh on A1 and ₹16.30 lakh on A2. The total fine amount, ₹1.40 crore, has been directed to be paid as compensation to Bennix’s mother.
The court further clarified that if the accused fail to pay the compensation, their properties will be seized and auctioned. The proceeds will then be given to the victim’s family. This judgment is seen as a strong message against custodial violence and a step towards justice for the victims.
